The position of Keeper/Trainer is a full-time, hourly position (five, eight hour days per week). Responsibilities include daily care, weighing, preparing diets, cleaning, training and exhibit maintenance for our zoo population including lions, a giraffe, psittacines, ratites, tortoises, and our adorable guard dog Diesel. All keepers work with the entire animal collection. This position also requires a lot of guest interaction. A standard day would start with your typical feeding/cleaning/maintenance and the later half of the day you would spend sharing stories with guests about our animal family.
Qualifications for the Keeper/Trainer include: Experience/Education: High School Diploma or GED. Bachelor's degree is preferred. Experience working at a similar facility and basic knowledge of operant conditioning are a plus. Physical Efforts: Must be in good physical health and able to bend, reach, lift, push, pull, or carry at least 50 lbs in a desert environment that includes extreme heat, dust, extreme cold (winter), etc... Communication/Interpersonal Skills: Applicants must be outgoing, creative, confident, self-motivated, and work well independently, as well as with others. Applicants must have good stage presence and the ability to work in a fast-paced, labor-intensive environment. Vaccinations: Must be fully vaccinated for Covid-19. Compensation: $13-$16/hour dependent on experience, eligibility for health benefits at 60 days of employment, 4 free general admission passes per year.
